PersonalityMortimer is an incredibly lazy person by nature. Given the option he would most likely sleep eighteen hours a day and then spend the rest reading either childrens books or texts of forgotten magical lore. Despite his laziness, poor work ethic, lethargy and near-narcoleptic sleeping pattern, Mortimer has an intense love for magic, spending hours at a time researching it even in his sleep. After years of being overworked and little sleep, Mortimer developed the amazing ability to obtain knowledge even while he slept. It is for this reason it is not uncommon to find Mortimer tucked away in some form of library or ancient tomb hunched over a desk with an open book and eyes half open. Despite appearing asleep, he is actually learning and (on more then one occasion) creating an intricate diorama of his findings. Although having an ability which students of any age would kill for, Mortimer is not aware of the precise method by which he came by this ability. Others have tried similar methods and have come up empty handed. The pervading theory is that his ability comes from a hyper-active subconscious who is possibly an autistic-genius in terms of logical-mathematical and linguistic intelligence. Conscious Mortimer however seems to be of only slightly higher than average in these regards.
Despite his laziness and oft-diversions into magical texts and children books, Mortimer also seems to posses an unnaturally high level of responsibility. To clarify, he feels that when problems or situations arise in his immediate vicinity he has some kind f compeling duty to fulfill them to the best of his ability. It is this drive to be responsible and “take care of” things that has resulted in his near inability to refuse a request. Indeed, Mortimer has a very difficult time saying “no” to anyone should they ask something of him. It is only with great difficulty that he manages to keep this a secret and an even greater difficulty that he can actually refuses a direct request.
Secretly Mortimer is actually a bit of a pervert and though he would never admit it and seems to hide it very well, he has a tendency to ogle girls he finds
extremely attractive. However when he finds a girl he genuinely cares about and respects he tends to stop this behavior regardless of their radiance. Thankfully, given Mortimers general feelings of responsibility and self control he rarely lets these things get in his way, but any female who purposefully uses sex appeal to get his attention will undoubtedly obtain it.
Generally speaking, Mortimer remains calm and collected wearing a partial yet sleepy smile. He manages to remain unfazed in the strangest of situations yet can still somehow be flabbergasted at mundane things or acts of extreme insanity or stupidity. When something occurs that hi unconscious mind hasn’t thought of his typical response is “whodasaidawhatnow”, a statement of utter disbelief and requiring a brief rewrite of his schema to accomadate such a strange event. Thankfully, this rarely occurs given his genius of an id has expanded to such a point that it believes almost anything to be possible.
Mortimer remains keen in the face of setbacks or problems and on occasion comes up with “clever plans” to out-root himself and his comrades from harrowing situations. Still he is an inexperienced tactician and will often make mistakes much to his chagrin. He is error prone at times but does not seem to become depressed at these. It could simply be a desire to not look back and face his failings but Mortimer always looks ahead never asking “what should have been done” only “what can I do next time”. In this strange sense Mortimer is an individual driven to succeed and look out for those close to him.
Recently with his studies in shadow magic drifting into the realm of darkness he has obtained the ability to sense the amount of “darkness” inside of a persons soul. This has evolved to such a point that he can determine a persons alignment (light dark or neutral) from a great distance. Although he is capable of determining how many people how far away they are and who they are (if he has met them before) he cannot tell their exact locations or their true characters. In order to fully examine a persons soul, both Mortimer and the participant must be willing and allow Mortimer a vision into their soul. He tries not to use this ability on his friends as he can often tell the content of their characters from this. It has put strain on more than one of his relationships and he fears that over use of this ability could leave him isolated from the people he has grown to care for.
History Mortimer was raised by his grandfather, an undertaker who workout of the graveyard of a small town. Mortimers grandfather held the idea that one should work as much as they can in life because they'll get a good long nap when they die. Every morning his grandfather would wake him up at 4:00 a.m. and have him dig graves, polish the tombstones, upholster the coffins and in general keep the grave yard as clean as possible (in general all useless tasks as the dead don't care about their state of being). When he finally left for school at 7:00, he always slept on the bus trying to catch a few minutes of sleep. On the returning bus Mortimer slept again and did his homework (to get more rest, Ian learned to study and write in his sleep, all of his assignments are of average quality AT BEST). After returning home he was put right back to work and given whatever insane cabbage based to-go meal his grandfather had cooked up during the day (hence is utter disdain for all things cabbage). They would labor on the graveyard until midnight at which point the undead would unanimously rise from their graves and forced back down. Finally, at 1:00 a.m. Mortimer would go to sleep and the cycle would begin again the next day.
Class Magic Duelist
Weaponry/Equipment A small cane which contains a small sword within it. The cane itself acts functionally in the same way as a magic wand or staff.
Sealed darkness; takes the form of a gun capable of firing off magical power from Mortimer similar to saggitta magica bolts. At the command of liberatio it morphs into a gunblade, capable of cutting and firing bullets at the same time. While in this form its user receives the benefit of the liberatio spell.
Shield of the spring palace; This is a round 18 inch shield capable of splitting apart into many copies of itself and then being manipulated according to the wielders discretion. However with enough force the shields can be knocked away from their intended trajectory. The shields cannot travel farther than 15 meters from the original shield and there can only be 15 shields at any given time.
Phasing ring; This ring features the passing phases of the moon across a blue background. By turning the ring in a certain direction the surrounding area becomes brighter or dimmer. It does not however have any affect on magical light sources such as lux or umbrae. (It also functions as a focus for magic spells similar to a wand or staff)
Magic earset; this earpiece is enchanted to allow the wearer to telepathically send messages to any ally in a 50 km radius. Barriers, interference or excessive use of magic around the wearer cause static and make the message incomprehensible
Lyon's sword aka Shadow blade; A pitch-black sword tainted by darkness. An indestructable but otherwise unremarkable weapon.

Type: Utility
Incantation: N/A, requires no incantation as it is channeling magic through a medium then manually shaping it rather than having it perform a specific task. It is essentially an extension of Shundo.
Range: Must be within a 10 meter radius of dim or low light area
Effect: The user sends magical power into a shadow and shapes it into some form of inanimate object. The size and density of the object is dependent on the amount of magic used in its creation and the amount of shadow available at the time. Supposedly, any weapon created with this is magically enhanced and can deal damage comparable to a close ranged sagitta magica spell. The objects created will last until Mortimer dispels them or Mortimers concentration is broken, this can be dealing damage to Mortimer or the objects equal to 4* their in a single turn. However damage to it is not cumulative and so it must either be destroyed all at once or it will not be broken at all.
Umbrae Militis Sniper - (6)

A meter-long barrel extends out from the center of the sphere. It is capable of firing converged saggitta maggica bolts with a force equal to half this techniques rank from this barrel. Range: 3 meters
Effect: Utilizing massive amounts of magical power in low level spells, the caster is capable of creating effects well over the top of the normal limits. At the casters current level, they are capable of utilizing this technique with four different elemental spells, creating an uncontrollable burst of these spells directly in a three by three meter area. For example, a shadow spell or light spell would create a mass of luminous or obscuring material while an wind or fire spell would create a torrential area of elemental turbulance. Currently the caster may create darkness, lightning, ice and wind.
Liberatio - (7)

Effect: A simple spell which unleashes the stat boosting capabilities of a "sealed" weapon altering its form in the process. The stat boost lasts a number of posts equal to the spells rank and gives a total boost equal to twice the spells rank.
Swarm Form– (4)
Type: Utility
Incantation:
Effect: The caster transforms into a swarm of bats made out of shadow. The total mass of these bats is equivelant to the actual mass of the caster. While in this form the caster is unable to cast spells, benefit from magic items or be healed. However the caster does become immune to physical attacks, and cannot be targeted by a mind affecting technique unless it can target multiple opponents. Techniques which are capable of obliterating/damaging everything in the area can cause half damage to the caster. While in this form the caster cannot use spells or cause damage to an opponent beyond what a normal swarm of bats could do. The caster is capable of flying in a similar fashion as normal bats. This technique lasts a number of posts equal to it’s rank* 2
Nocturna Nigredinis - (11)
Type: Offensive/ Defensive
Range: 15 meters(offensive), 1 meter (defensive)
Incantation: Exorior phasmatis ut habito in meus animus , tribuo mihi macies umbra redimio Familius
Effect; This spell summons a shadow familiar (appearing as a gigantic doll like creature made out of shadow , torn cloth and leather) which mimics the movements of its caster creating massive fists and shroud like shields in addition to thin ribbon like projectiles. The barrier-shrouds and fists are capable of automatically defending the caster from any overt attack regardless of whether or not the caster can detect it. If the barrier is struck with 4* its rank of force in a single turn then it will dissipate, however damage to it is not cumulative and so it must either be destroyed all at once or it will not be broken at all. Additionally, the fists deal damage equivilant to the spells rank*4 converged saggitta magica shots. Additionally the familiar has a number of blade-like ribbons equal to its rank, which can be fired as saggitta magica shots except they do slashing instead of piercing shots. Any overt attack against the caster will be percieved by the familiar and blocked, however movements which are not overtly hostile will not be picked up by the familiar and can be used to harm the caster. However if the caster so choses they can move the familiar independently of themselves and even have it defend them on command. This spell will dissipate after its rank*2 in posts and will then require a three post cool down.
Shadows embrace - (4)
Type: Utility

Incantation: Adveho iam frater quod sanctimonialis. Permissum nos complexo nostrum cado socius per patefacio telum quod tutela pro lemma. Reverto lemma ut uterus umbra ut vires per partum. Penetro locus laxamentum. Umbra complexo
Effect; This spell creates a temporary cocoon of shadow, suffused with healing energies. The healing energies suffusing it are capable of stabilizing a dying person or healing a moderately damaged person back to 75% health. The cocoons are mainly meant for transport however and are fragile. A single attack is capable of breaking them. Those inside the cocoons will become unconscious and cannot fight or make actions while inside, nor can they exit the cocoons themselves without external help or the spell is completed. In order for a person to receive the benefit of this spell they must remain in the cocoons, without being broken out for six consecutive posts. Once this time is over those inside the cocoons will wake up and may continue fighting. (Heavily injured or those close to death require 12 posts in the cocoons and will only be restored to 50% health). Anyone who is broken out of the cocoons does not regain any health.
Shundo – (6)
Type: Utility
Incantation: N/A
Range: 15 meters max
Effect: By sending magical energy beneath himself, Mortimer is capable of launching himself at intense speeds between two unobstructed points, almost instantaneously. As he moves, he leaves after images from the point he was previously standing in. He is now capable of using this technique in mid air but can only travel in straight lines with it. It is possible to predict where he will travel and so intercept him before hand.
Evil Eye- (8)
Type: Offensive
Range: Any visible target within 10 meters
Incantation:Evil Eye
Effect:This is a very powerful very ancient spell. By looking at a person hatefully and with harmful intent the caster is able to curse the target. However in order for this to work the caster must make direct eye contact with the target long enough to say the words "evil eye" without blinking. Glasses or other transparent materials will interrupt the casting. There must be absolutely nothing but air obstructing the casters gaze and the targets eyes. Magical barriers can block the gaze. When hit by the curse the target will feel weak and sick, suffering -10 speed and -10 endurance to a minimum of 1. This effect will last a number of posts equal to the techniques rank. Because of the karmic backlash which would result otherwise, this technique can only be used once per thread.
